  • 6 cups Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced Sliced to ¼ inch thickness
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice To prevent browning

  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg Enhances the cinnamon
  • ½ cup thick caramel sauce Plus extra for serving
  • 2 unbaked pie crusts Homemade or store-bought
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch To thicken the juices

Method
 

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples evenly, then toss them in a large bowl with the lemon juice.

  2. Cook the apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a skillet over medium heat until the fruit softens slightly.

  3. Stir the cornstarch and caramel sauce into the skillet, then let the mixture cool completely.
  4. Roll out the bottom pie crust and place it in a 9-inch glass pie dish.
  5. Pour the cooled apple filling into the crust, mounding it slightly in the center.

  6. Cover with the second pie crust, crimp the edges tightly, and cut several slits in the top for steam to escape.
  7. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 minutes until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.

Notes
