Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups fresh sweet cherries, pitted Can substitute frozen cherries or cherry pie filling
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar, divided Used for both the filling and the batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Spoon and leveled
  • ½ cup unsalted butter Melted in the baking dish
  • 1 cup whole milk Room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder Ensure it is fresh for a fluffy crust

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and melt the butter directly in a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. Toss the pitted cherries with half a cup of sugar in a bowl until juices form.
  3. Whisk the flour, remaining sugar, milk, and baking powder in a separate bowl until just combined.

  5. Spoon the sugared cherries evenly over the top of the batter without mixing the layers.

Notes

Do not stir the batter and fruit together in the baking dish. The batter will rise over the fruit naturally as it bakes.
