A refreshing, classic Mint Julep made with smooth Kentucky bourbon, homemade simple syrup, and fresh mint over crushed ice. Gently muddle the mint to avoid bitterness.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 ounces Kentucky bourbon 80 to 90 proof is best
  • 8 leaves fresh mint leaves Plus 1 large sprig for garnish
  • 0.5 ounce simple syrup Equal parts sugar and water
  • 2 cups crushed ice Enough to pack the glass

Equipment

  • 1 Rocks glass For building and serving the drink
  • 1 muddler To gently press the mint
  • 1 Bar spoon For stirring and frosting

Method
 

  1. Place the fresh mint leaves and simple syrup in the bottom of a rocks glass.
  2. Press the leaves gently with a muddler just until you smell the mint.

  3. Pour the bourbon directly over the muddled mint and stir briefly.

  4. Fill the glass completely to the top edge with crushed ice.

  5. Stir vigorously from the bottom up until the outside of the glass is frosted.
  6. Slap a mint sprig against your hand and nestle it next to a short straw to serve.

Notes

Serve immediately while the glass is frosted. Do not attempt to store leftover mixed cocktails as the ice will melt and dilute the drink.
