- Bring large pot of salted water to boil, cook pasta according to package directions until al dente, reserve 1 cup pasta water before draining.
- While pasta cooks, melt butter in large skillet over medium heat, add minced garlic and cook 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant but not brown.
- Pour heavy cream into skillet with garlic, bring to gentle simmer and cook 3 to 4 minutes stirring occasionally until slightly thickened.
- Remove skillet from heat, stir in grated parmesan cheese until melted smooth, season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
- Add drained pasta to skillet with sauce, toss together adding reserved pasta water a little at a time until sauce reaches desired consistency coating pasta.
- Toss in fresh chopped parsley and extra parmesan, serve immediately while hot garnished with lemon zest if desired.

Notes
Save pasta water before draining. Don't burn garlic or sauce will be bitter. Remove from heat before adding cheese. Add pasta water gradually to reach desired consistency. Serve immediately for best texture.
