- Place Oreo cookies in a large ziplock bag, seal it, and crush with a rolling pin until they become fine crumbs that resemble dirt.
- Set aside about 1 cup of Oreo crumbs for the top layer.
- Beat softened cream cheese and butter together in a large bowl until smooth and fluffy.
- Add powdered sugar to the cream cheese mixture and beat until well combined and creamy.
- Fold in 6 ounces of Cool Whip gently until the cream cheese mixture is light and fluffy.
- Whisk instant chocolate pudding mix with cold milk in a separate bowl for 2 minutes until it starts to thicken, then let sit for 5 minutes to set completely.
- Spread half of the crushed Oreos in the bottom of a 9x13 inch dish, pressing down gently to create an even layer.
- Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the Oreo crumbs, smoothing it completely to the edges.
- Spread the chocolate pudding over the cream cheese layer, smoothing carefully without mixing the layers together.
- Spread remaining 6 ounces Cool Whip over the pudding layer smoothly.
- Sprinkle remaining crushed Oreos over the Cool Whip to create the final dirt layer.
- Press gummy worms into the top so they look like they're crawling through the dirt if desired.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4 hours or overnight, to let all layers set properly.
- Serve cold, cutting into squares or scooping into individual cups.

Notes
The key to perfect dirt cake is chilling it for at least 2 hours before serving. I rushed this my first time and the pudding was too runny to slice properly. Give it time to set in the fridge and you'll get those clean layers that make this dessert so impressive.
